Man gets 10 years after admitting drug offence

2009-09-17 00:00

A PIETERMARITZBURG man, Loganathan Reddy (49), pleaded guilty in the regional court here yesterday to dealing in 806 ecstasy and 189 mandrax tablets.

He was sentenced in terms of a plea bargain agreement to undergo 10 years imprisonment, of which six and a half years was suspended on conditions that included payment of a R15 000 fine to the SA National Council for Alcoholism and Drug Dependency (Sanca).

The fine is payable in monthly installments into Sanca’s bank account. In his plea Reddy stated that he was approached on about February 7, this year at his home in Sargini Road in Northdale by an unknown Indian man.

The man had asked him to keep some mandrax and ecstasy tablets for him at his home where it was to be collected by a third person in seven days time. In return the man offered to pay Reddy R1 000 when the tablets were fetched.

Reddy accepted the proposal and took the tablets into his possession.

On February 13, police arrived at his house and during a search — which was conducted without a warrant — the drugs were found.

Reddy admitted that the offence he committed amounted to dealing in drugs because he was aiding in the “collection” of the tablets, and had no legal reason to possess them.

He admitted he had no defence to the charges and said he was truly remorseful for what he had done.

Regional Magistrate Chris van Vuuren was told that Reddy’s only relevant previous convictions dated back to 1983 and 1984.
