Man gets 10 years for crime of passion

A MAN who, in a fit of anger, shot dead his fiancée and his friend, when he caught them in bed together, has been sentenced to correctional supervision and imprisonment.

Eric Mchunu (49) told the court he was deeply remorseful and wished he could turn back the clock.

On Friday, Acting Judge Kobus Booyens sentenced him to a total of 10 years’ imprisonment for the murders of Sthembile Promise Mzobe and Bonginhlanhla Jabu Meyiwa, at France on August 6 last year. He must serve one sixth in custody, after which he may qualify to serve the remainder of the sentence under correctional supervision.

The court took into account that Mchunu showed remorse and immediately handed himself over to the police after the incident.

In his plea he described Mzobe as his fiancée for whom he was still paying lobola. Their relationship started in 2009 and they had two children together and lived as husband and wife.

Mchunu said Meyiwa was a neighbour and he regarded him as a friend. He’d never suspected that he and Mzobe were involved in an affair behind his back.

He said Mzobe told him on Friday August 5 last year that she planned to visit her parents in Hilton.

When he got back from work he phoned her.

At about 3.45 am on August 6 another neighbour woke him and told him that he could not get into his room because Mzobe and Meyiwa were sleeping in it.

“I was devastated and confused by this news. In fact I did not believe him and wanted to go and see for myself.”

Mchunu said he was armed with his pistol, which he always carried on him.

When he opened the door he saw Meyiwa and Mzobe in bed together with his youngest child.

“I was totally overcome with anger and emptied my gun on both the deceased … I had no time to reflect.”

Mchunu picked up his child and took her to a friend to look after. He then called his sister and told her what had happened, then went home, got changed and phoned the police.

He was immediately arrested and made a full confession.

Mchunu said he had loved Mzobe.

“On reflection I am deeply remorseful for what I have done. I killed my children’s mother. I wish I could turn the clock back,” he said.
