Man held after tavern shooting

2011-07-18 00:00

A SECURITY company, Reaction Unit South Africa, arrested a suspect and recovered an unlicensed firearm shortly after a gunman shot and wounded a patron at Linda’s Tavern in Verulam in early yesterday morning.

The head of Reaction Unit SA, Prem Balram, said a woman called the control centre at about 1 am and reported the shooting.

The caller said a man and his girlfriend had a dispute with other patrons over a bottle of beer.

The suspect drew his firearm and shot randomly at patrons in the tavern.

He went outside and was involved in an altercation with another patron.

The suspect fired a shot at the person, but missed his intended target. Instead the bullet struck another customer in the lower abdomen, exiting through his back.

The injured man was rushed to the nearby Osindisweni Hospital, bleeding profusely.

Balram said Reaction Unit SA was told the suspect fled in a yellow Toyota Corolla and was provided with a registration number.

En route to the scene reaction officer Lushen Naidoo saw a yellow Corolla drive into a garage in Verulam and approached the vehicle. As he did so the car sped away. The registration matched the description given.

Naidoo called for backup and a high-speed chase followed. A shootout ensued in Himalaya Drive and the gunman ran into nearby bush.

Another occupant of the vehicle was arrested at the scene, and an unlicensed firearm was recovered.
