Man held for teacher’s death

2012-09-03 00:00

A MAN was charged yesterday with the murder of a Richards Bay school teacher, who was found dead in her flat in July.

The man was arrested at his workplace on Friday morning and formally charged yesterday, said Richards Bay police spokesperson Captain Debbie Ferreira.

He is due to appear in the Richards Bay Magistrate’s Court today.

The man may not be named until he has appeared in court, but is believed to have been closely acquainted with Laurette Pillay (42), who was found in her flat in the suburb of Veldenvlei with a swollen face and bruises to her neck on Tuesday, July 24. She had been a teacher at Veldenvlei Primary School.

The severely-beaten Pillay was discovered on her bedroom floor by her landlord and her apartment’s caretaker after Veldenvlei Primary principal Vivian Raubenheimer had suspected something was wrong when she didn’t arrive for work. Her pastor had also become concerned when she failed to arrive for a prayer meeting.

Pillay’s landlord, Dr Terence Kelly, administered CPR for about 20 minutes before emergency services personnel arrived and declared her dead.

Contacted by The Witness shortly after the incident, the man charged with her murder said: “[People] can allege what they like [about me beating her]. It is their word against mine. I know what we have been through.”
