Man in custody after rape of girl (6)

2012-08-06 00:00

THE horror of child rape has raised its head again on the South Coast.

In the latest incident a six-year-old girl was assulted in a community just inland of Umtentweni on Friday.

A 28-year-old man has been arrested and will appear in the Port Shepstone Magistrates’ Court today.

He was arrested shortly after the matter was reported.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid told The Witness the child had gone to a local spaza shop to buy chips and was raped.

At first the girl had kept quiet, but she was traumatised.

“When her mother was bathing her, she started crying and told her what had happened.”

The man who had allegedly raped her was taken into custody.

By last night the child was back home with her parents, having undergone a medical examination.

The child was raped in Louisiana, much of which comprises newly built RDP houses on the steep slopes on the inland side of the Umtentweni ramp toll plaza on the N2.

Unlike another recent rape incident on the South Coast, at Bhoboyi, the Louisiana incident did not involve mob justice.

Police have appealed to communities not to take the law into their own hands when dealing with such matters.

Last week a man died in hospital after having been attacked at Bhoboyi. The mob accused him of raping a 19-year-old woman, who is still recovering from the assault.

“The suspect was severely assaulted by community members.” said Wiid.
