Man jailed for killing father

2015-04-23 00:00

AN Estcourt man who murdered his abusive father by hacking him with a bush knife, has been sentenced to an effective 10-year jail term.

An additional five years’ imprisonment imposed on 21-year-old Qubekoni Ndawonde, was conditionally suspended for five years by acting high court Judge P. Singh yesterday.

Ndawonde pleaded guilty to killing his father, Bhekubani, during an altercation last December.

The court heard that Ndawonde’s body still bears the scars of years of abuse when he was beaten by his father with a sjambok.

At times he had to hide from his father at neighbouring houses.

On the day of the murder, Ndawonde said his father had criticised the fact that he bought his younger sisters shoes, demanding to know where the money for food was.

His father then told him to “eat the shoes”.

Ndawonde was supporting the family, and his father was unemployed.

In a rage Ndawonde said he grabbed the bush knife and struck his father several times. He did not know how many times he did so, but the post mortem revealed four deep wounds to the chest and body.

When sentencing Ndawonde, the judge took into account that he was provoked, and the long-term abuse that he had suffered at his father’s hands.

The judge said Ndawonde had tried to report the abuse to police, who sent him away and told him it was a “domestic issue”.

“Had the police become involved, this tragedy might not have happened,” the judge said.
