Man jumps to his death at Grey’s

A 55-YEAR-OLD man committed suicide by jumping to the ground from a third-floor window at Grey’s Hospital yesterday.

Police identified the man as Nhlanganiso Dladla.

When The Witness visited Grey’s Hospital yesterday, staff, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described the incident as “horrific”.

“We just heard the doctors screaming that we must rush with a stretcher to try to rescue the man who had jumped through a ward D1 window on the third floor,” said one.

She said they believe the man had domestic problems and decided to end his life.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said an inquest docket is being investigated by Town Hill police.

Dladla became the third person to commit suicide in a South African hospital in three weeks.

In mid-September, Morné van der Westhuizen (19), jumped to his death at Mediclinic Hospital, Bloemfontein, after a visit to his girlfriend, Chrisna Botha, who was declared brain dead after falling from her horse.

And towards the end of September, a patient jumped from a sluice room window on the third floor of Addington Hospital, Durban.

It was reported that the suicide rate in South Africa had risen by 48% over the past 10 years — particularly over failed relationships.

The KwaZulu-Natal Health Department recently said that South Africa has the eighth highest suicide rate in the world.
