A 49-YEAR-OLD Asmalls employee is believed to have been killed in a freak accident following a burglary on Friday night.

Unconfirmed reports state that the man was apparently inspecting the ceiling after there had been a reported break-in at Asmalls in Victoria Road.

He reportedly slipped and fell to the ground, and died on the spot.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said: “We can confirm an incident that occurred on [Friday], at about 8.40 pm. A 49-year-old man allegedly fell from the room of the wholesaler at Victoria Road.”

Naicker said he was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Pietermaritzburg police are investigating an inquest and circumstances around it,” he said.

Police could not reveal the name of the victim as his family had not been informed.

Several attempts to speak to the Asmalls Curtaining Stores management was unsuccessful at the time of going to print.
