Man killed in lift accident

2013-12-12 00:00

A 37-YEAR-OLD security guard who worked at Grindrod cargo company was killed yesterday when he was allegedly crushed by a lift in a building in Margaret Mncadi Avenue.

The man, who’s name is known to The Witness, died on the scene. His name is being withheld until his family has been informed.

The man’s colleagues spontaneously broke into a Zulu hymn as they watched their colleague being loaded inside a mortuary van around 1.20 pm.

Grindrod’s group secretary, Cathie Lewis, said they were in a process of informing the security guard’s family and will issue the full statement in due course.

She said the Department of Labour was investigating the matter and hoped that the investigation would be concluded as soon as possible.

A colleague said the security guard was respectful and would greet everyone in the morning.

“He used to stand by the door … We’re still shocked,” she told The Witness.

They were offered counselling, she said.

Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said the cause of the incident is unknown at this stage and the Durban Central police are investigating.

According to Grindrod’s website, they specialise in moving dry bulk, bulk liquid commodities, containerised cargo and vehicles by road, rail, sea and air, providing specialised services on route.
