Man killed on CBD church premises

2014-03-20 00:00

A WOMAN employed by the Metropolitan Methodist Church in Pietermaritzburg was shocked to discover the body of a man inside the church premises yesterday morning.

She was reporting for duty at the city centre church when she stumbled on the body, believed to be of a vagrant, lying in a pool of blood.

Police at the scene could not believe the brutality inflicted on the man.

A senior police officer said he believed the man had been robbed before being killed.

“They might have searched the bag and, when he retaliated, they stabbed him with a bottle neck. When they saw that he was still alive, they then used a concrete slab to finish him off,” he said.

Metropolitan Methodist Church Reverend Alan Bester said the man was not known to the church. “But we are appalled by the victimisation of the destitute,” he said.

Bester said the man had no money on him and the brutality with which he was killed could not be justified.

“Our staff member who discovered the body was shocked, just like we are shocked at the terrible murder.

“The church is supposed to be a safe place for everybody, and the last thing one would expect is to see someone having been terribly murdered within church premises.”

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said the man was about 35 years old.

“The victim had sustained multiple stab wounds to his head, chest and back. A brick and bottle neck were found nearby,” he said, adding that police are investigating a murder case.
