Man killed trying to catch suspect

2013-10-08 00:00

A MEMBER of the Hibberdene Community Policing Forum (CPF) was killed yesterday. Sandile Gumede (23) was shot while with two colleagues who were with police searching for a suspect at a local tavern.

The two were wounded.

Yesterday, Transport, Community Safety and Liaison MEC Willies Mchunu expressed anger at Gumede’s murder. He said the killing was a “serious setback in the battle against crime”.

“Members of CPFs are selfless people who volunteer their time to serve the community and to contribute towards the fight against crime. These should be the most valued members of the public. But unfortunately they are now being targeted by the rogue and criminal elements who want to impose themselves on the communities,” said Mchunu.

He said he was adamant that police will soon catch up with those responsible for killing Gumede to face the full might of the law. He further extended his heartfelt condolences to the Gumede family and his colleagues.

Colonel Jay Naicker said cases of murder and attempted murder had been opened. He said Gumede was killed when he attempted to arrest a known criminal in the area.

“The suspect opened fire on the group and fled the area. It is a concern for SAPS management that in all incidents where police confront criminals they choose to shoot at police officers in an attempt to kill them and evade justice. We urge members of the public not to confront armed criminals but to contact police immediately to enable us to respond swiftly.”
