Man robbed outside workplace

2014-06-26 00:00

A PIETERMARITZBURG businessman resisted armed robbers when he was held up at gunpoint and robbed of thousands of rand on Greyling street early yesterday morning.

He was held up by two attackers who confronted him as he pulled into work.

The man, who also asked that his business’s name and the amount stolen not be disclosed for security reasons, said he put up a fight and was assaulted by one of the attackers carrying a gun.

He said they reached into his car and stole business takings destined for the bank.

He believed that he may have been targeted as the attackers were waiting outside when he arrived.

“It the same routine every day for the past three years and nothing has ever happened before … I definitely believe that they were waiting for me.”

He said as he pulled into his parking bay, two men in their twenties approached him.

“One of them produced a firearm. I struggled with the one carrying a firearm and he assaulted me. I thought they were going to steal the car because the other one kept saying: ‘Take the keys, take the keys’ in Zulu.”

“I just saw the gun and my life flashed before my eyes. I knew that I had to fight, what else could I do? I was not going to go down without a fight. The whole episode took about a minute and yet it felt like an hour.

“I must commend the police and the security company for the way responded. Their reaction time was quick,” he said.

Police spokesperson Thulani Zwane confirmed the attack and said police were investigating a case of armed robbery and that no arrests have been made.
