Man shot while raping little girl

A KNIFE-WIELDING man was shot in the leg after he refused to comply when police ordered him to stop raping a seven-year-old girl in Richmond outside Pietermaritzburg on Tuesday afternoon.

It is alleged that the half naked man, a 21-year-old from the Magoda area, produced a knife and threatened the police while he continued molesting the child . She was returning from a local primary school when he attacked her.

The attacker held the knife at her throat during the horrific act.

Police found that while the child was walking along the road the man appeared and threatened to stab her. He took her to a nearby forest where he molested her.

It is not clear how long the rape lasted as the child’s grandmother said she finishes school at 1 pm. Police surprised him at almost 4 pm.

The grandmother, who cannot be named to protect the minor’s identity, said she was called to the scene after the drama was over.

“My grandchild finishes school at 1 pm and she was supposed to be at home soon after,” she said.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan said a local person heard the girl screaming in agony in the forest.

Upon investigating, he found the man on top of the girl and immediately alerted the police.

“Police arrived and immediately warned the suspect. However, he refused to get off and lunged forward at the police with the knife.

“Police were thereafter forced to retaliate and fired one shot at the suspect. He sustained a gunshot wound to the left leg and was immediately placed under arrest,” said Jeevan.

She said the girl was dragged away by the man while walking home from school to the centre of Richmond. It seems that she was walking alone.

Police said they are trying to establish if the man has committed any previous violent crimes.

The grandmother and another family member took the child to a hospital in Pietermaritzburg for a medical check-up.

Jeevan said the suspect, who was taken to hospital under police guard, will appear in the Richmond Magistrate’s Court on his recovery.
