A 22-year-old man is still lost at sea while another was rescued by a bystander at Doonside beach near Amanzimtoti on Saturday.

At 4.53 pm, National Sea Rescue Institute Durban received reports that two men were in distress at the beach. Vodacom Netcare 911, police search and rescue and Lifesaving SA responded.

According to Sea and Rescue spokesman Craig Lambinon, when they arrived at the scene a bystander had rescued a 28-year-old man.

“The recued man’s friend [the 22-year-old] was missing and is presumed to have drowned after last being seen behind the breaker line,” said Lambinon.

A search continued for the man until last light on Saturday, but there was no sign of him. A full scale search continued yesterday, but by midday there was still no sign of the man. Lambinon said the search is now in the hands of the police search and rescue team.

Both men are believed to be from Pongola and work at Secunda.
