Man tells court he’s guilty of rape

A MAN (23) charged with raping a 91-year-old woman at Taylor’s Halt on February 17 has indicated that he wants to plead guilty.

The man, who cannot be named until he has formally pleaded to the charge, appeared briefly in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

The case was postponed until today to give him an opportunity to consult with a legal aid lawyer, after he told the court he plans to admit guilt in the case.

The man is also charged with housebreaking and theft of R250.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Joey Jeevan said yesterday police arrested a suspect in the kwaDindi area of Taylor’s Halt on Sunday with the assistance of locals.

She said it is alleged that the rape victim had been about to go to bed in her one-roomed house at about 9 pm when she heard a knock at the door and then on a window. She ignored it. A short while later an unknown man with a knife climbed through a window.

The rapist allegedly told the woman to lie down and cover her face with a blanket. She was allegedly raped several times into the early hours of the next morning.

Before the attacker fled, he allegedly demanded money and the victim handed him cash she had under her pillow.
