Man who held family hostage charged with attempted murder

THE man who held his family hostage for seven hours in Imbali earlier this week has been charged with five counts of attempted murder.

Mandla Ngcobo (28) from Imbali is still in a critical condition in hospital.

His case was remanded in absentia at the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday, as he is still in ICU in Durban.

Ngcobo is charged with robbery of a police officer as he allegedly took an officer’s firearm, resisting arrest and discharging the firearm in a public place on February 3.

He is also charged with the attempted murder of four police officers, Captain Edward Mkhabela, Constable Nkanyiso Ndlanzi, a Constable Mkhize and Reservist Qondi Zondi.

Ngcobo is alleged to have tried to kill himself during the hostage situation.

The charges are as a result of Ngcobo being arrested after it was alleged that he stabbed his ex-girlfriend’s new partner.

He was taken to the Mbalenhle clinic by the police after his arrest as he had also been injured.

At the clinic, it is alleged that he managed to disarm a police officer and fired shots before fleeing.

He was later found at his home where he held his family hostage and later allegedly shot himself.

The case was remanded until February 13 for further investigation.
