Manager: Nature played a trick on us

THE Royal Showground’s main cattle arena was flooded during Monday night’s deluge, in which the station at the Botanic Gardens measured 119 mm of rain.

Royal Agricultural Society general manager Terry Strachan said it will take them about a month to clean up.

“We have no one to blame for this — it was just nature playing tricks on us. We have to do a major clean-up and the items at most of the club houses have to be removed.”

Strachan said a lot of their electrics are under the water and will only be able to assess the damage when everything has been cleared out.

Parts of the city were badly hit during the deluge, which saw 69 mm of rain, caused by the flashfloods, recorded at the Darvill weather station.

Drivers had to negotiate flooded roads, laced with storm debris and surface water. Aside from the many residents of the Jika Joe informal settlement who lost their homes in the storm, no other major damage was reported.
