Manager assures no bread shortage after bakery fire

2012-01-16 00:00

ALBANY Bakery in Ohrtmann Road has assured its customers that there will be no shortage in bread supply following a fire that destroyed the bakery’s cooler on Saturday.

The Msunduzi Fire Department was alerted about the fire and rushed to the scene.

The fire started at about 2 pm and it took more than two hours for firefighters to put it out.

Saturday’s scorching heat did not help the firefighters, whose uniforms were soaking wet with perspiration.

The traffic on Ohrtmann Road was diverted because traffic officers had completely closed the road.

Albany Bakery general manager André Grobler was relieved that there were no injuries.

“We do not know what the cause of the fire is at the moment, but we will investigate and by Monday [today] we should be in a better position to know exactly what could have caused it,” said Grobler.

He also assured customers that there would be no disturbance in the supply of bread.

“We are also grateful to the Msunduzi Fire Department for responding quickly to this situation, otherwise it could have been worse,” he said.

Grobler said they cannot yet estimate the cost of the damage.

Msunduzi Fire Department divisional officer Godfrey Mchunu said it was a huge fire.

Police spokesperson Leiutenant Joey Jeevan said no case has been opened and no foul play is suspected.
