Manase report not racist

2012-02-23 00:00

THE KwaZulu-Natal Cabinet yesterday welcomed the Manase report detailing allegations of fraud and maladministration in the eThekwini Municipality.

In a statement released after its meeting, the cabinet said it rejected suggestions of racist motives behind the investigation.

Media reports quoted some of the officials fingered in the investigation as questioning the motives for the probe and whether it was racially motivated. The former municipal manager, Mike Sutcliffe is white and several of his senior managers were Indian.

The statement said the cabinet was briefed yesterday by Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) MEC Nomusa Dube.

During the briefing cabinet members called for the matter to be handled with sensitivity. Dube was thanked for the steps she had initiated to deal with the investigation that were in accordance with the relevant statutes, specifically the Municipal Finance Management Act.

The executive council noted that she had fulfilled her legal obligation to investigate all allegations of irregularity.

“All she has done is part of her official duties, not a personal prerogative,” the cabinet statement said.

It noted that the municipality’s full council had been briefed.

“We call on all those who might be affected by the report to use the correct platforms to air their side of the story.

“In this regard, we reject demeaning comments and outrageous statements in the media.

Appropriate forums should be used to clarify issues ...” the statement added. — Witness Reporter.
