Mandela Day Marathon prize money ‘will be paid soon’

2014-09-18 00:00

WINNERS of various races at the Mandela Day Marathon have been up in arms this week after not receiving their winning pay cheques.

As quickly as these concerns were raised, the race organisers have put doubts to rest and winners will be paid. It seems as though a number of logistical steps had to be followed before payment can be made.

Competitors who took part in the Mountain Bike (MTB) Dash and Trail Run have also not received payment, but event organiser Johan van Staden said that they had to wait for results to be signed off.

“KZN MTB submitted their results early and were signed off by their respective technical officials. They have supplied me with all their results including the banking details required to make the payments. The same applies to KZN trail running,” Van Staden told The Witness.

“A delay was however experienced with KZN Athletics due to the vast number of categories within the various events, totalling 154 category prizes to be awarded in the three major events. This was signed off on Sunday, September 14, which will now release the funding to pay … prize money from the other sports codes,” he said.

Although the MTB and trail running winners could receive money soon, the winners of various road running categories will have to wait longer.

“We are currently going through the process of releasing the funds from our sponsor into a single distribution account which will then pay the federations, making sure the prize money gets paid to the athletes,” Van Staden said.

“However the road running results are dependent on drug testing results and will only be paid when SAIDS gives KZNA the clearance to pay prize money,” he said.

Although an official payment date cannot be given, he said athletes can expect to receive payment within the next few weeks.
