Mandela Day goes viral

2010-07-17 00:00

FACEBOOK groups and pages have joined in the Mandela Day celebrations to create awareness and to encourage people to give 67 minutes of their time to a good cause.

Facebook user Andiswa Salman believes that you have “67 minutes to make a change in someone else’s life, showing ubuntu and kindness are priceless …”

Kgotso Moate aims to continue serving the community on a regular basis. “I would like to be part of the Mandela’s Day 67 minutes initiative due to the fact that South Africa is what it is because of uTata Madiba. We will honour him day by day...”

Groups such as “Nelson Mandela International Day”, “Nelson Mandela Day Madrid 2010 (Official)” and “Mandela Day” give people the opportunity to share ideas about what they plan to do to honour Madiba.

With a joint following of 19 807 people for these three Facebook groups alone, there is a Internet hype in abundance surrounding the event.

Madrid hosts the first and official International Day of Nelson Mandela this year.

Madiba said that “It is time that a new generation takes on the burden”, and following his advice, young people from around the province have posted their plans for the day.

A group called “Imagine Durban” plans to be involved with the Chatsworth Youth Centre as it hosts a variety show. It has invited people to perform an item that upholds the values and principles of Mandela.
