Mandela Marathon: Last day to enter inaugural race

2012-08-04 00:00

TODAY is the last day to enter the inaugural Mandela Day Marathon.

There is already a surge in demand from athletes to participate, which has resulted in the number of entries having doubled.

Originally set at 466, this being taken from Nelson Mandela’s prison number 46664, the number of entries for the 42,2 km marathon has been increased to 940, which is Mandela’s age multiplied by 10.

uMgungundlovu district municipal manager Sbu Khuzwayo said the increase in the number of entries was due to the overwhelming demand from the public.

Having listened to some of the athletes who would like to be part of the special event, he said, “we felt it was the right thing to do”.

“This has also been made possible with the added support of the sponsors of the event, who have thrown their full weight behind us,” he said.

Khuzwayo said that as organisers of the event, they would like to make it as accessible as possible so that it became the resounding success that it deserved to be.

Entries are also open for those who would like to take part in the 10 km fun run/walk.

The race starts at Manaye Hall in iMbali and ends near Howick at the Mandela Capture Site.

Today is the final day to enter.

For registration, an ID Book is required and should you not have a licence, you will need to get a temporary one to be able to compete. The legal age to compete is 19 years.
