Mandela and Winnie see grandson graduate as a doctor

2009-12-05 00:00

FORMER president Nelson Mandela and his ex-wife, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, yesterday watched with pride as their grandson, Dr Zinhle Dlamini, took the Hippocratic Oath after graduating as a medical doctor.

Dlamini, their first grandson to qualify as a doctor, did so along with 128 medical students at the University of Limpopo’s Medunsa campus. His parents, Princess Zenani Mandela-Dlamini and Prince Thumbumuzi Dlamini of Swaziland, also attended, and Madikizela-Mandela was the guest speaker. She said she is proud of her grandson, and all the country’s new doctors.

At the beginning of her long speech, she said: “There are perhaps those who say I should keep my talk short and funny, but at my age, I don’t do short or funny. Short and funny I’ll leave to Julius [Malema, the ANCYL president],” she said, to the enjoyment of the young doctors, academics and guests.

“I want to speak about serious things that matter. Keep your passion. Make mistakes and learn from them.”

Although Mandela did not speak, he was given a standing ovation when he waved to the crowd. He was one of the first to congratulate his grandson.

An excited Dr Dlamini said he felt very good, especially because he worked so long and hard to become a doctor.

Prince Dlamini said he is proud of his son.
