Mandela loss: family mourn death of newest great-grandchild

2011-06-28 00:00

FORMER president Nelson Mandela’s newest great-grandchild has died, just two days after his birth.

Zenawe Zibuyile Maienne Mandela was born three months prematurely.

His mother, Zoleka Mandela, lost her 13-year-old daughter, Zenani, just over a year ago in a car crash on the eve of the football World Cup.

Sello Hatang, spokesperson for the Mandela Foundation, would not give details of the cause of the baby’s death yesterday, describing it as a private family matter.

On Sunday websites and Sunday papers published messages of congratulation to the baby’s parents, Zoleka and 7de Laan actor Sekoati Tsubane, who plays Kabelo Padi.

A statement from the show’s publicity department said the baby died from complications of his premature birth.

“Sekoati and Zoleka, our hearts go out to you and we are keeping you in our prayers,” the statement said.

Zenani was killed in a crash while being driven home from the World Cup opening concert.
