Mandlenkosi successfully defend soccer title

2013-09-03 00:00

MANDLENKOSI Secondary School defended their Circuit Managers Champions Cup on Saturday with a 2-1 win against Wyebank Secondary School in the final.

It was all happening at the Saccharine Grounds in Phoenix, where pupils enjoyed a gala day of finals and supporters cheered their sides towards glory.

This was the second Champions Cup tournament. The Mafukuzela Gandhi Circuit launched the first at the Northcroft Community Grounds in Phoenix last year. It seems this event is set to get bigger and better every year.

In July this year, 330 primary and secondary schools set their sights on the Champions Cup, participating at intra-circuit level to determine the champion schools to contest the finals.

Schools in the Mafukuzela Gandhi cluster compete, plus schools in the Durban north-west cluster. Within the two clusters, the 11 circuits — Billy Nair, Verulam, Phoenix Central, Phoenix North, Inanda North, Inanda Central, KwaMashu, Malandela, Ntuzuma, Kranskloof and Westville — compete at primary and secondary school levels, with the respective champions crowned this past Saturday.

On the day, the final showdown saw Mandlenkosi prove too good for their Wyebank rivals in a lively and spirited showdown. Both sides were keen to attack and enjoyed vocal support from fellow pupils.

As the sun set on proceedings, sport was the winner.

Hopefully other circuits in the province will host similar programmes and tournaments in future to enhance and encourage pupils to play sport.
