Mandoza in accident, two killed

Johannesburg — A blood sample could not be taken from the “king of kwaito” Mandoza, at the scene of an accident which claimed the lives of two people, because he had been placed on a drip before Metro police arrived.

Several people — on the scene and during telephonic inquiries — told Beeld that Mandoza (real name Mduduzi Tshabalala) was drunk and was being protected because he was a celebrity.

Police said Mandoza drove his Chrysler Crossfire into a VW Jetta on the N1 on Saturday at about 1.23 am. From signs of the impact, it is suspected that he was driving too fast. The Jetta rolled several times and the two passengers were trapped inside. They died on the scene.

A police spokeswoman confirmed that when police arrived, Mandoza was already in an ambulance and placed on a drip.

“According to law we cannot test for alcohol after a person has been placed on a drip. It influences the results of the test. The first priority of emergency service workers is to save lives. They do their job and we do ours,” she said.

However, Esmé de Wet, spokeswoman for the Life Flora clinic, said that Mandoza’s condition was not life-threatening. Witnesses said the musician had his wits about him and was walking around.

A charge of culpable homicide is being invstigated. The identity of the deceased was not yet available at the time of going to print.
