Maqongqo residents battle with water cuts

2008-12-11 00:00

Lack of safe drinking water in the Maqongqo area in Camperdown is forcing members of the community to resort to drawing water from nearby tadpole-infested streams.

Ambrose Mweli brought The Witness a sample of the water that his grandchildren had fetched from a nearby stream. It was swarming with tadpoles.

He said his family and members of the community have been without water for more than two weeks.

Area councillor Mdu Ntuli said that water cuts are normal in the area. Sometimes they last more than a year, and at others as little as three weeks.

He said that the area usually has prolonged water cuts in the month of December.

“It is usual around this time of the year for us to have water cuts.

“The water is usually restored around February the following year,” said Ntuli.

Repeated pleas to the uMgungundlovu District Municipality to attend to the matter of water cuts have time and again fallen on deaf ears, said Ntuli.

He added that he has asked to meet the responsible officials of the district last Sunday to bring the matter to their attention, but the meeting did not take place.

Zakhe Gumede, water operations manager at uMgungundlovu District Municipality, said the water in Maqongqo is supplied by the eThekwini Municipality.

“A water pipe that supplies the area with water burst … eThekwini water officials told me that they had been working on solving the problem for the past four days,” said Gumede.
