KWAZULU-NATAL athletes earned four gold, one silver and three bronze medals at Sunday’s Nedbank Durban City marathon and South African Championships, which was won by defending champion Mabuthile Lebopo.

The Lesotho athlete ran a superb tactical race, scything through the field over the final five kilometres to break the tape in two hours, 13 minutes and 42 seconds.

In his best performance to date, Enos Matalane overhauled Mike Fokorini for second, while a fast-closing Johannes Kekana left his charge too late and had to settle for fourth.

Runner-up Matalane had the consolation of the SA Championship title ahead of Kekana in a top 10 with only South Africans.

South African Ernst van Dyk outsprinted Frenchman Denis Lemeunier on the track to win the wheelchair event in 91 minutes, 34 seconds.

The small, 11-athlete KZN team secured eight medals in the SA Championships, with the best leading individual performance set by Eloi de Oliveira of Boxer, who provided the leading individual performance of the KZN team, winning the 50 to 59 category in 2:36,53, almost five minutes clear of Mpumalanga’s Jumario Khuzwayo. Nicolas Dlamini added bronze to the provincial tally in 2:46,37.

Impressive second and third positions from Miya Lawrie and Carol Mercer set the foundation for gold in the 40-49 team prize ahead of the Central and Northern Gauteng combinations. Sarah Mahlangu won the category in 2:58,10. Julie Shadwell (3:23,31) closed the team for KZN, while Judith Geldenhuys won the final provincial bronze for her 3:26,33 in the 50-59 grouping.
