Marauders too strong for Kokstad lads

THE Midlands Marauders played against Southern KZN in an Ebbo Bastard Inter Sub-Union Trophy match in Kokstad over the weekend in what is always a tough and testing fixture.

“We were a little depleted as some players were unavailable due to injury and prior commitments but the depth of the squad was evident with a solid performance in winning 24-9,” said Marauders head coach Beans Bateman.

The Marauders started well in what was a very cold day in Kokstad and scored an early try through wing Ricky Chirengende. Marauders did not capitalise on the start and with some handling mistakes and uncertain decision-making they were not able to stamp their authority on the game.

A second try was scored by Rogan Heyns, but Southern KZN kept themselves in the hunt by slotting three penalty goals for Marauders to lead 10-9 at the break.

The second half saw the Marauders producing a far more solid performance and they started to take control. A further two tries were scored by centre Rickus Janse van Rensburg and number eight Leon Stevens. Both were converted by flyhalf Wessel Booysen for the Marauders to run out comfortable winners.

In further Ebbo Bastard Trophy action, Durban beat the Northern KZN Lammergeyer 26-18, while in the Philip Nel U21 Cup competition, Midlands Marauders U21 maintained their impressive form with a 43-12 win over Southern KZN.

In Pretoria, the KZN Duikers beat the Loftus 200 team 47-45 after leading 30-10 at half-time. The Loftus 200 club is made up of ex-Blue Bulls players.

The Duikers were on top at the half-time break, but the Pretoria men staged a fightback to lead 45-44 at the death. As the referee was readying himself to blow the final whistle, the Duikers managed to steer a penalty goal between the posts to record a memorable victory.
