Marburg: Police nab suspected toy-gun robbers with SMS

2011-10-28 00:00

THREE men used a realistic toy gun to rob Bates Service Centre, adjacent to Bimbos in Marburg, on Tuesday night, managing to flee with cellphones and an undisclosed amount in cash.

Police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said the men entered the convenience store and held up the cashier with a gun. She added that a petrol attendant and guard from Lazer 911 Security chased the men and arrested one of them.

Owner of the security company, Basil Lanka, said the suspects were spotted heading towards the Oribi Toll Plaza.

Pranesh Prosad, who was patrolling for the company, chased the robbers after a frantic staff member, Luvuyo Hlatshwayo, flagged down his vehicle, yelling that the store had been robbed.

Prosad cornered the suspects and pounced on one of them. After getting into a scuffle with the man and using pepper spray, Prosad managed to apprehend the suspect to make a citizens arrest.

The suspected robber’s two alleged accomplices, however, fled but were arrested by SAPS later after they allowed the arrested suspect to contact his accomplices by SMS. Wiid said police officers arrested the second suspect after a few hours. Further investigation led the members and members from the K9 Unit Port Shepstone to a house in Gamalakhe where a third suspect was arrested. Cash, a plastic firearm replica and cellphones were recovered from the suspects. Police believe the men are linked to two other robberies in the area this month. Investigations on the matter are continuing and the men will appear in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s court today on a charge of robbery.
