Marcell Coetzee is Collegian of the Year

2011-10-07 00:00

MARCELL Coetzee of Hibberdene received the honour of being named Collegian of the Year at the annual Durban Collegians Rugby Dinner held at King’s Park in Durban recently.

The 20-year-old loose forward has been a revelation this year, rising through the ranks from a promising club talent to a fully fledged member of the Sharks squad in just seven short months.

The prodigious youngster’s year kicked off with him being included in a South African under-20 training squad before making his Vodacom Cup bow for the Sharks XV in their 30-19 win over the Blue Bulls on February 26.

A string of man-of-the-match performances earned him a call-up to the Sharks’ Super Rugby squad in March and he went on to make his Super Rugby debut as a replacement in the Durban-based side’s 34-16 win over the Brumbies on May 7, one day before his 20th birthday.

His trend of winning debuts at King’s Park continued when he ran out in the No. 7 jersey for his first Currie Cup game on July 16, once more against the Blue Bulls, and celebrated the occasion by scoring a spectacular try in the Sharks’ 35-16 victory.

Coetzee, who has been a mainstay in the Sharks’ starting line-up ever since, was acknowledged as the Sharks XV Vodacom Cup Player of the Year and was one of three players shortlisted for the Currie Cup Player of the Month award for August.
