Margate: Three men in custody after pub patron beaten to death

2011-08-17 00:00

THREE men have been arrested and charged with a murder that took place at a pub in Margate on Sunday morning.

Petros Opperman (46), Dovin Christian van der Walt (33) and

Jakes Nicholas Putter (33) appeared in a Ramsgate court accused of beating Landile Mampuso (26) to death.

The men are in custody and a bail application will be heard on August 23.

A police report said Opperman approached Mampuso at about 2 am, demanding a cigarette. When Mampuso refused, Opperman assaulted him.

Van der Walt and Putter saw the assault take place and joined Opperman.

“Mampuso tried to flee, but failed,” said police spokesperson Captain Gerald Mfeka.

The men were arrested on Monday after police received information about their whereabouts.

The post-mortem revealed that Mampuso had sustained a fracture to his skull, a broken jaw and several other injuries.

No weapon was used during the assault.

“The suspects assaulted the man with their hands. They also kicked him.”

Mfeka said that Margate police arrived on the scene and saw that Mampuso was still breathing.

“The police officers called for an ambulance, but the man died on arrival at hospital about an hour later.”
