Margate airport: Prices now from R599

MARGATE — The 4 000 business- people who signed a petition in support of regular flights from Margate to Johannesburg have vanished in thin air since the launch of a regu-lar air service between the two hubs.

Studio88 Aviation MD Tertius Myburgh wants to know where all the business owners and government officials are since they resumed their flights to Johannesburg.

“Where are the local government and municipality?” Myburgh asked. “At the indaba they said they fly up and down between Johannesburg on a weekly basis, but we haven’t even had one phone call from them.”

Since regular flights officially started from Margate Airport, about R800 000 has been spent in September and only 82 tickets have been sold.

“We have stuck our necks out this far and are totally committed to the community that wanted regular flights from Margate to Gauteng, but where are the 4 000 people who signed the petition?

“Use us please — and where are you?

“Obviously we won’t be able to afford to keep running at a loss if we are not supported,” said Myburgh.

He added, however, that “we have put so much money into this venture that, regardless of the problems, we are determined to see it work”.

Myburgh announced new prices and new flight plans to entice would-be flyers.

Flights from Margate to Lanseria one way will now cost R995 for the first three people who book; R1 195 for the next four seats; R1 395 for the next five seats; and R1 495 for the last seven seats.

However, on Tuesday evenings out of Lanseria to Margate and Wednesday evenings out of Margate to Lanseria, all seats will be R599, excluding VAT, one way.

Even the most expensive seat has dropped R300 in price, said Myburgh.

Myburgh said the public is under a huge misconception when it thinks it is buying cheap tickets from other airlines.

“Those that advertise tickets for R250 a seat are misleading the public because, when you try to buy a seat, you will find out that you have to buy a seat months in advance to actually get one of those specials.

“I have just been on one of those ‘special airline’ flights and the cheap tickets were booked until the end of March next year and my ticket cost over R1 000,” he said.

Add that to the cost of petrol from Margate and the South Coast and a flight from Margate Airport is still very viable, said Myburgh.

Times of flights will change from Monday.

• Mondays: depart Margate at 6 am and return on Tuesday at 7 pm. All seats to cost R599 excluding VAT.

• Wednesdays: depart Margate at 6 am and return to Margate from Lanseria at 4 pm; depart Margate again at 6 pm. All seats to cost R599 excluding VAT.

• Fridays: depart Lanseria at 5.30 pm.

From December 7 to January 9, there will be flights in and out of Margate six days a week.

“I could be despondent, but we are not going to give up.

“Hopefully we are going to give our businessmen what they want and we will see how the new times work,” said Myburgh.
