Margate locals unhappy with sex shop application

MARGATE businessmen are unhappy with the possible granting of an entertainment application to the Hibiscus Coast Municipality that would see the town’s sex shop turn its vacant space into two cinemas, each with two small bedrooms.

Adult World is a national leader in the sex shop industry and opened a Margate branch last year. Many businessmen have expressed concerns over the degeneration of the Margate CBD, with the sex shop considered as an example of the drop in calibre of some of the town’s businesses.

CEO of Ugu South Coast Tourism, Michael Bertram, expressed concern over the proposed expansion of the store.

“The issue is that we have been promoting the south coast as a family destination and we would like to continue to do so,” he said.

“Something of this nature would go against the image that we are trying to achieve.”

A Margate local whose business is located in the CBD, not far from the sex shop, is outraged that the store is planning on extending its premises.

“It just goes to show how things have changed over the years,” said the man who asked to be unnamed.

“I remember when Margate was a prime holiday location on the south coast; businesses like this have made it what it is today.”

The Weekend Witness managed to get hold of David Nichols, regional manager for Adult World, who said that he was completely unaware of any uproar the proposed extension had caused.

“Everybody has a right to do business as they please as long as it is legal,” he said.
