Maritzburg College and Epworth take canoe challenge

2011-11-01 00:00

MARITZBURG College and Epworth made sure that the trophies for the top girls and boys schools in the annual Capitol Caterers and Popes Canoe Centre Interschools Challenge stayed in Pietermaritzburg for another year.

The 2011 challenge came to a close on Saturday with the running of the final event, the 10-lap Enduro on Blue Lagoon in Durban.

A total of 36 teams of four paddlers each contested the Enduro with Maritzburg College winning the boys’ U18 category, but Michaelhouse was victorious in both the U16 and U14 categories. Westville took second place in the U18 and U16 and Clifton in the U14.

Only two schools contested the girls’ Enduro, with Epworth making a clean sweep, apart from St Anne’s second place in the girls’ U18.

Apart from the canoe polo event, where Michaelhouse took top honours, Maritzburg College gained the most points in all of the six events that made up the challenge, finishing with 235 points to Michaelhouse’s 181.

The surprise of the season was Westville High School, which although having been a part of the challenge for a number of years, has never been in the top 10.

This year, with a strong resurgence in canoeing in the Durban area, Westville took third place among the boys’ schools, ahead of the Hilton and Kearsney colleges.

Epworth dominated with an overwhelming number of quality paddlers across the U14, U16 and U18 age categories. Their final tally was 235 points with St Anne’s and The Wykeham Collegiate fighting it out for second and third place on 48 and 43 points, respectively.

The highest points earner in the individual standings was Epworth’s Brittany Petersen who earned 48 winning all four of the individual events to take the girls’ 2011 victrix ludorum trophy.

Donovan Wewege from Maritzburg College took home the victor ludorum.

A total of 193 schools paddlers from 30 schools took part in the 2011 challenge.

The 2012 challenge begins on February 11, with the 500-metre K1 Sprint Event at Nagle Dam.
