Maritzburg Marathon Entries open

2011-01-15 00:00

THE 2011 Weekend Witness Maritzburg Marathon, powered by Honeydew Dairy and Durban University of Technology, takes place at 5 am on Sunday, February 27.

This pre-entry event is the most popular marathon and half-marathon combination in KwaZulu-Natal. More runners use this marathon as their Comrades qualifier than any other race. The race is also a Two Oceans Qualifier.

As with the Comrades Marathon, entries are pouring in and the anticipated 2 500 marathon entries could soon be reached. The organisers are planning for a total field of around 4 000.

To assist prospective participants, entry collection boxes are placed at Poobie Naidoo Sports in Pietermaritzburg, Total Sports at the Westville Pavilion, Durban Runner in Glenwood, the KZN Athletics offices at Kings Park and Sports Zone in Durban North. More information can be obtained and online entries be made via the race web site at

Registration, where entrants will collect their race numbers, T-shirts and final instructions will begin at 5 pm on Friday evening, February 25 and continue on Saturday from 9am to 5pm.

For those who really want to leave it to the last minute, the final opportunity for registration will be between 4 am and 4.45 am on the morning of the race.

To complement the marathon, the organisers have arranged fun runs and walks ranging from a 4,2 km down to a 42 metre toddler trot and 21 metre nappy crawl.

These events are all fun for the whole family and will enhance the fun at registration on Saturday 26 February. Everyone will be a winner.

Following last year’s success, KIDZONE will again be there on both Saturday and Sunday so that, for a nominal fee, couples can take part and leave their children in safe professional hands where they will be entertained. — OC.
