Maritzburg Open: Bluff man takes it

2009-10-13 00:00

THE Maritzburg Open was played over 36 holes on Sunday at the Maritzburg Golf Club.

There was a very strong field, with four of the victorious KZN players present and 19 golfers playing off scratch or better. The winner, however, wasn’t one of those 19 players.

Derek Scullard from Bluff National, playing off a one handicap, won the Open with a score of 135, which is a brilliant nine under par.

The tournament, played in overcast conditions and with greens not quite at their best because of the recent spring treatment, saw nine players equal or break par over the 36 holes.

The morning round leaders were Steve van Heerden and local Maritzburg youngster Bradley Grayson on 67. Jan McDermot posted a 68 with four players on 69: Jean Paul Blampied, Tandi Mavundla, Chris van der Merwe and Derek Scullard.

The afternoon round brought mixed rounds of golf. Young Grayson fell away with an 80, which put him completely out of contention. Van der Merwe, last year’s winner, made 74 for a total of 143. Blampied and Mavundla both scored 73 for a total of 142. McDermott scored a creditable 72 to finish in third spot with a total of 140.

Van Heerden from Scottburgh, who recently joined Margate Country Club, made another very competitive round of 69 to total 136.

This score would normally have been good enough to win, but Scullard had other ideas. To add to his morning round of 69, he went on a blitz of four birdies in succession, making putts on holes 12, 13, 14, and 15 for the best round of the day of 66.

Summary of results:

1. Derek Scullard 135; 2. S. van Heerden 136; 3. J. McDermott 140; 4. J-P Blampied & T. Mavuundla 142; 5. Chris van der Merwe 143
