Maritzburg girls join U21 world hockey squad

THREE Pietermaritzburg schoolgirls have been included in the South Africa U21 Junior World Cup 2013 women’s hockey squad. The Maritzburg girls, including in the squad, are Amy Greaves of Epworth, Heather McEwan of Epworth, and Hlubikazi Sipamla of Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School.

The trio were part of the KZN Inland team and all received age-group recognition due to their performances.

“The squad of 32 players will be attending a training camp in Pretoria next month,” said Voortrekker director of sport Charmaine Koekemoer, who has been appointed by the South African Hockey Association as manager of South Africa’s 2013 Junior World Cup team.

Koekemoer is also the chairperson of KZN Inland schoolgirls’ hockey and vice-chairperson of KZN Schools’ hockey.

The training camp, under the eye of SA U21 head coach, Lindsey Wright, takes place at the High Performance Centre at the University of Pretoria from December 4 to December 9.

Fifteen schoolgirls have been included in the 32-player squad. Apart from the PMB trio, the remaining 12 schoolgirls come from Driehoek (one) in Gauteng, Stirling (one) in East London, St Stithian’s (one) in Johannesburg­, Eunice (three) in Bloemfontein­, Bridge House (one) in the Boland, Wynberg (one) in Cape Town, St Andrew’s (one) in Johannesburg, El Shaddai (one) in Western Province, Hudson Park (one) in East London and

Tanya Britz of Sentraal School in Bloemfontein, who made her senior national debut at the 2011 Africa Cup Olympic Qualifier tournament in Bulawayo two months ago. Britz was chosen last month as the SA U18 Girls’ Player of the Year.
