Maritzburgers will have to spend more than a penny

2014-12-05 00:00

PIETERMARITZBURG residents will soon be paying to use public toilets in the city centre.

The Msunduzi Executive Committee (Exco) yesterday accepted a recommendation that a pay and use toilet system be implemented for the toilets in Publicity House next to the city hall.

Exco accepted the recommendation of a R2 charge to use the toilet and that the cleaning of these public restrooms be managed by a co-operative. The municipality will only install the pay system. It was also recommended an investigation be done into implementing the same principle across the city.

“The management and the maintenance of public toilets is to be handed over to the co-operative and the relevant business units within the municipality will monitor the operations of the public facilities,” municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi said.

Nkosi said the principle is meant to change the behaviour and attitude of the public. He said the public toilets in the city had been misused and vandalised by the public to a point that some had become unusable.

According to Nkosi the pay toilet system was being introduced to the Publicity House toilets as they were within the heart of the city centre.

“Close to these toilets are important buildings like Parliament, the Magistrate’s Court and the Premier’s building, which all attract local and international visitors,” Nkosi said.

He maintained there are already areas in the city that the public were paying to use the toilets and those areas were working just fine.
