Martizburg United hold out for ‘miracle’ sponsor

2012-05-24 00:00

MARITZBURG United fans will have to wait a little while longer to find out if they will have a local PSL team to support next season.

The club is still in the process of deciding whether or not to accept a three-year deal worth R20 million to make Port Elizabeth’s Nelson Mandela Bay stadium their preferred venue for the 2012/13 campaign.

The decision was due to be made this morning, but chairperson Farouk Kadodia told The Witness yesterday that the PSL had granted the club more time to decide, and that by early next week a final call on the matter would be made.

“We are hoping for a miracle,” said Kadodia. “Hopefully between now and early next week something will come up in the form of a local sponsor and we can stay in Maritzburg.”

The club’s attempt to secure a local sponsor last week fell through after the unnamed company offered United a deal worth R1 million per year — a figure that Kadodia felt would devalue the brand of his franchise.

“I can honestly say that we don’t have any other potential sponsors lined up,” Kadodia said.

He also disclosed that he had received no help from local or provincial government with regard to sponsorship of the franchise.

“Any football club needs the support of the community, businesses and the government if they are to survive.”

Kadodia said the Port Elizabeth parties involved in the deal had been understanding in his willingness to take his time with the decision.
