Mashaba undecided on Bafana captain

2014-09-12 00:00

CAPE TOWN — Shakes Mashaba is still undecided regarding who the permanent captain of Bafana Bafana will be as his analysis of his players continues.

Orlando Pirates’ Senzo Meyiwa has been handed the armband in the absence of Itumeleng Khune after the Kaizer Chiefs number one was ruled out for six weeks due to an ankle injury.

Following South Africa’s goalless draw against Nigeria in front of a 32 432-strong crowd at Cape Town Stadium on Wednesday, Mashaba is still studying his current crop of players in order to decide on the permanent captain.

“So far we are still studying the players — character, behaviour and what they can do,” said Mashaba.

“That is why we going on with Senzo. He’s been doing well. Senzo has been doing well for the past three seasons. He deserves to be there in the absence of Khune — he deserves to take over.”

South Africa next face Congo Brazzaville, a side with two wins so far in their Afcon qualifying campaign, away on October 11 and return to South Africa for the home leg on October 15.
