Mass rhino evacuation for Kruger mooted

2014-08-11 00:00

THE Kruger National Park is awaiting Cabinet’s nod tomorrow before it can go ahead with government’s desperate plan to relocate all rhinos from the park to protect them from poachers.

After news of the plan broke yesterday, a spokesperson for the park, William Mabasa, told our sister paper Beeld that hundreds of rhinos would be removed from Kruger should Cabinet support the plan.

A spokesperson for Environmental Affairs, Albi Modise, said he did not want to pre-empt his minister Edna Molewa’s announcement tomorrow. The Department of Environmental Affairs announced on Friday that Molewa would address the media in Pretoria tomorrow.

Topics she would cover included, among other things, the results of the 2013 rhino census held in the Kruger National Park and the steps the department would take against rhino horn poachers.
