AN induna and his two sons who face murder and attempted murder charges in connection with a massacre in the Ngudwini area that killed six are set to apply for bail tomorrow.

Zwelibanzi Mthetwa (57) who police believe led the group that carried out the attack, Sibongiseni Mthetwa (25) and Sithembiso Mthetwa (28) appeared in the Eshowe District Court yesterday.

However, their defence counsel said he needed more time to prepare for the bail application, and asked for a postponement until tomorrow.

The accused have already appeared briefly at the Nyoni Magistrates’ Court since their arrests, but the case has been transferred to the Eshowe courts, where the three will appear together.

The two sons were arrested first. On August 26 the induna handed himself over to police and was arrested by the KwaDukuza cluster task team. Zwelibanzi Mthetwa appeared in Nyoni Magistrates’ Court on August 28 and the case was remanded until yesterday for a bail application.

On August 4 at around 4.30 pm, a group of armed assailants attacked people who were attending a traditional function at the Khuzwayo homestead in Ngudwini area. The suspects opened fire on the group, fatally wounding six men and injuring 17 others. The motive for the shooting is unknown, police said.

Six counts of murder and 16 of attempted murder were opened at Sundumbili police station.

Police have said further arrests are imminent.
