Maths training proposal on hold

2015-02-17 00:00

THE proposal to give Grade 8 and Grade 9 mathematics teachers extra training over 23 Mondays during school hours had been put on ice, for now.

The announcement was made by Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga and training had already started in some provinces.

But this will now be put on the back burner after teachers’ unions, school governing body representatives and other interested groups met with the Education Department on Friday. They say they had not been consulted on the proposal.

CEO of the Suid-Afrikaanse Onderwysunie said Friday’s meeting resulted in a decision to halt all implementation plans in all nine provinces until all parties had been consulted.

He said his union raised the one-sided implementation of the project that did not consult the schools or the affected staff.

He said there was a real need for intervention, but not for a one-size-fits-all approach.

CEO of the Federation of Governing Bodies of South African Schools Paul Colditz said the schools in the federation stood by their statement that this was an attempt at a quick fix to address a problem that has its origins in the child’s grounding phase.

“This is not about short-term solutions. We have to think and plan over the long term.

“The department listened, but still wants to continue with the plan. A follow-up meeting will be held,” Colditz said.

The department had not reacted at the time of going to press.
