Matric fatally stabbed at school

2012-08-06 00:00

A FATHER of a Grade 12 pupil, Mpendulo Mzulwini (19), of Egagasini High School in Umlazi, said he still had unanswered questions about how his son was stabbed at the school.

Mpendulo was stabbed on Friday by a boy who is not a pupil at the school and died in hospital on Saturday.

Apparently he was trying to rob the boy of his money.

“When you send your child to school, you don’t expect him to be killed,” said the father, Gcina Mzulwini.

He said his wife was still in shock. She was taken to hospital for trauma counselling.

He said the Education Department had not explained how the perpetrator had gained access to the school.

A teacher called Mzulwini at 8:50 am telling him he needed to rush to school. Then the teacher drove Mpendulo to hospital.

When he arrived at the hospital, he said Mpendulo was already in casualty and spoke to him briefly before he went for an operation.

Mpendulo told him that he was not in class at the time because there was no lesson taking place as some of the pupils had gone on a school excursion.

He had left the classroom and was confronted by the assailant, who grabbed him and put his hand inside his pocket.

“That is when Mpendulo tried to defend himself and was stabbed in the shoulder and back,” his father said. He lost too much blood to survive. “I’m heartbroken. He was my first born and had high hopes for him,” he said.

The MEC for Education, Senzo Mchunu, called the act “hooliganism” and said they were saddened by Mpendulo’s sudden death.
