Matric leavers in deadly crashes

“CARNAGE and destruction” was how paramedics described two accident scenes involving teenagers believed to have come down from Gauteng after their matric exams.

Netcare 911’s Chris Botha said the first incident occurred shortly after 2 am on Tuesday, in Lighthouse Road, Umhlanga.

A Mercedes with a Gauteng registration collided with a Toyota Condor. Of the four occupants in the Mercedes, three sustained serious injuries while one was critically injured and died in Umhlanga Hospital. The deceased was 18.

Botha said the driver of the other vehicle sustained neck and back injuries.

That afternoon, Netcare 911 raced to a similar scene, also involving matriculants from Gauteng, in the La Lucia area.

According to Botha, the driver of an Opel Corsa with four occupants lost control of the vehicle, sending it rolling a number of times.

“We were quite surprised that anyone survived the accident because the roof of the car was squashed flat on to the seats. The car was a total write-off,” said Botha. Of the four 18-year-old occupants, one was airlifted to hospital while the other three were taken by ambulance.

It is believed that the teens were on their way to Cape Vidal for a holiday.
