Matric trials on track for the moment

2013-09-06 00:00

THE writing of trial examinations by matriculants is back on track, the Education Department announced yesterday, releasing a timetable showing tests will continue from today until Friday, September 20.

However, the South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (Sadtu) — which has embarked on a work-to-rule campaign over a number of grievances — said its members would meet on Monday to discuss the situation.

Sadtu officials met Education MEC Senzo Mchunu on Tuesday and reached an agreement on some of the issues. The union threatened to take the department to court over the unresolved issues.

Speaking on Gagasi FM last night, Sadtu provincial secretary Mbuyiseni Mathonsi said they had agreed with the department that the exams should continue. “We agreed that the exams should be written, but within the seven hours of work as we are still on the work-to-rule.”
