Matrics: no glitches in marking

2011-12-06 00:00

EDUCATION bodies say they will keep a close eye on the province’s marking centres to ensure that all is going according to plan.

Marking started without a glitch at all 29 centres in KwaZulu-Natal yesterday. Nine thousands markers have been appointed to mark 1 750 849 papers written by 127 044 matriculants. Marking will be completed on December 15 and results will be released on January 5.

The National Teachers’ Union deputy president, Allen Thompson, said the union has received positive feedback from across the province.

“We are confident that everything will go well; however we are concerned about the turnout of markers. We want to ensure that those markers who cannot make it for any reason are substituted immediately. We don’t want a situation where markers are overworked as it can lead to human error.”

The provincial CEO of the National Professional Teachers’ Organisation, Anthony Pierce, said all the problems of the past seem to have been sorted out, while South African Democratic Teachers’ Union provincial secretary Mbuyiseni Mathonsi said they will be checking on the marking centres daily.
