Matrics: study now, pass later, dept advises

2011-06-30 00:00

THE class of 2011 is approaching the National Senior Certificate examination, with just 115 days to go, and the Basic Education Department is advising matriculants to make use of the opportunities available to help them succeed in their exams.

Department spokesperson Granville Whittle said a good starting point would be for matriculants to use the school holidays to focus on their studies. Schools in the coastal provinces closed last Friday and will re-open on July 18.

Whittle said all provinces have arranged support for grade 12 pupils over this period in the form of winter schools and other support programmes.

KZN Education Department spokesperson Mbali Thusi said there are three winter school programmes under way in the province. One is co-ordinated at a provincial level and targets the three worst-performing districts in KZN, namely Obonjeni, Sisonke and Vryheid, which turned in matric pass rates of between 62% and 66,6%.

Thusi said the second winter programme is organised at district level, and a school has co-ordinated its own programme.

Other support programmes can be accessed on the department’s website, or on the department’s Mxit platform.
