Mavundla lawyer puts offer

CONTROVERSIAL businessman and uMvoti ANC councillor Godfrey Mavundla is considering “alternative dispute resolution” in the malicious damage to property case against him.

This was heard at the Greytown Magistrate’s Court where Mavundla was appearing yesterday.

After it emerged that Mavundla is contemplating making an offer to truck owner Jan Fourie, the case was adjourned to December 9 while the two parties deliberate the offer.

Mavundla torched Fourie’s R2 million truck when it drove over his sugar cane at his farm in Seven Oaks in October.

Two trucks owned by Fourie were hired by Mavundla’s neighbour, Richard Cyrus, to load timber at his farm and when turning the trucks drove over the sugar cane.

Mavundla arrived on the scene and doused the cab of one of the trucks with petrol and set it alight.

He admitted to burning the truck, saying it was just retribution after Cyrus had killed 12 of his trained dogs. However, Mavundla pleaded not guilty when he first appeared in court last month.

The intention to make an offer was confirmed by Fourie’s lawyer Deon Schaup, who said he received a call from Mavundla’s lawyer who hinted about the plan.

“We are obliged to consider the offer if it is put before us, but it depends what it is, at this stage no offer has been made.”

Mavundla, ANC chairman in the Bhambhatha region, is also director of P.G. Mavundla Engineering and owns the Nomalotshwa farm where the incident happened.

He is out on bail of R10 000, and his passport was confiscated as he is considered a flight risk.
